Catherine Deer

Catherines’ home has been in the North since birth. Born in Edmonton, Alberta in 1960, she was lucky enough to travel soon after to northern Canada with her family, affording her the rich cultural exposure that has captured her heart and soul.

She developed her interests in art while receiving her early education in the Yukon, after which she attended the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta. Catherine later graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology with a diploma in Graphic Arts Administration.

Catherine values the importance and simple beauty that working with charcoal and graphite afford her. By exploring the details of a composition, and often through the use of metaphor, Catherine attempts to capture the essence of a moment in time, bringing to the canvas a lasting visual experience for the viewer.

She has chosen to stay in the Yukon, contributing to her community through her involvement in the visual arts. The Territory is a natural setting and inspiration for many of her works, as she practices her art full time in her home studio. She lives in Whitehorse with her husband Eric, a Jack Russell named Pico, and her horse, a Morgan gelding named Shadow.
