Workshops

Each workshop begins with a gallery tour, includes tea and coffee, and usually runs 5-7 p.m. Mondays. It costs $95 plus gst to register, plus a materials fee specific to each workshop that reflects the costs of  materials and additional preparation the artist has to do.

Watch for our pre-solstice workshops to be announced soon, including needle felting, Yukon clay, and fused glass.

To discuss these or other workshops, or to register, please email whitehorseartexperiences@gmail.com

We have a great lineup of workshops for the fall ranging from ceramics to fused glass to silk screen printing. Stay tuned for more details!

First up, Low tech silkscreen workshops with Nicole Bauberger

This is a series of workshops, but you can take just one, or two, or all three.

The basic workshop fee is $95 per session but if you sign up for two it’s $180 and if you sign up for all 3 it’s $260, plus materials fees that depend on which course or courses you’ve signed up for.

So, for example, if you take all 3 =$260 workshop fee+$25+$10 +$20=$315+ gst, and you leave with two screens, five printed cards, and a printed t-shirt.

Email whitehorseartexperiences@gmail.com to indicate interest and Nicole will answer all your questions!

1.      Sunday Sept 21 How to stretch a screen. 1-3 pm

This workshop will give you the skills you need to stretch your own silk screens.

We will build 12” square stretching frames using web clamps, and set them aside to dry.

Nicole will have pre-made some of these frames over which we will learn how to stretch silk screen fabric evenly and at the correct tension.

Nicole will also bring some canvases from ReUseful which we will disassemble and stretch screens on.

Each participant will leave with 2 useable screens and skills that transfer to stretching canvas and other related tasks.

Materials fee $25

2.      Monday Sept 22 Designing and painting screens

We will consider words as images, and talk about how silk screens work.

Participants will develop an idea that may or may not include a word. We will consider what colour the print will be applied to – if it’s a tshirt or paper. Nicole will have a variety of colours to work on. After an introduction, participants will develop their own ideas while Nicole circulates as a resource. Then we will paint our screens with screen filler and brushes. We will speed the drying with a blowdryer so as to be able to test the screens and correct as needed.

Each participant will leave (hopefully) with a screen that’s ready to print from.

Materials fee: $10 if you did the previous workshop and are bringing your own screen(s); $35 if Nicole is providing you with a screen.

So if you are doing just this workshop it’s 130 plus gst = $136.50.

3.      Oct 6 Printing Party!

The fun gets funner! Nicole will set up printing stations for all of the participants and you can play with printing from your screens, using improvisational and experimental layers of colour in each printing or in a series of printings.

Nicole will provide us with a ream of printer paper from which you can print as much as you like! Each participant will also get 5 high-quality Strathmore printmaking cards and envelope, and the right to pick one thing from Nicole’s stash of thrifted t-shirts for printing. Once you get a sense of what you’d like to do on the paper, you can make your series of cards and a t-shirt. You can also bring your own other garments, tea towels, etc., to print onto, or buy more cards or t-shirts from Nicole.

Each participant will be able to leave with a series of cards and envelopes, and a t-shirt, printed from their screen.

If you are just joining us for this session, you can use Nicole’s existing painted screens for your printmaking experience. In this case, the materials fee is $45.

So just this workshop is $140 plus GST = $147

If you are bringing your existing ready-to-print screens to this session, the materials fee comes down to $20 for inks, cards and one tshirt.

Nicole Bauberger kites from waste stream film plastic

In this family-friendly workshop, we will collage 3-foot-tall sled kites from clean film plastic in the gallery. We will then take them out to the Pioneer Cemetery to test-fly and modify. This fun, experimental workshop will leave you with a device made with your own hands that you can then take and fly in the Carcross Desert or some other wide-open space.

We will be using tape, bamboo and kite string.

Children should register with a grown-up assistant. $5 plus gst materials cost per pair.
