Workshops

We are offering a pilot project series of them, on the following Mondays. Each workshop begins with a gallery tour, includes tea and coffee, and runs 5-7 p.m.. It costs $95 plus gst to register, plus a materials fee specific to each workshop that reflects the costs of  materials and additional preparation the artist has to do.

June 2 Needle felting with Janet Patterson – learn to felt a mushroom.

In this two-hour class suitable for ages 12+, you’ll make a beautiful mushroom in colours of your choice. This is a beginner project; no former needle felting experience needed. All supplies are provided for the $10 plus gst materials fee.

June 9 Kathy Piwowar Dirty Pours

Choose your favourite acrylic paint colours and, with the help of silicon spray, create a totally unique composition.  The unpredictability of a dirty pour adds to the appeal of your abstract creation.  Pouring, tilting, blowing, tapping all lead to the magic of the outcome.  No previous art experience necessary and yes, dirty pours are messy and require appropriate clothing. Materials charge $20.00.

June 16 Aimee Ellis fused glass coasters

In this introductory workshop you will learn the basics about glass fusing as you design and create your own coaster(s). Aimee will provide the fusible glass in a variety of colours and formats, all you need to bring is your imagination! Materials cost is $50 plus gst per coaster. Participants are welcome to make more than one coaster for an additional $50/each if they can complete them within the workshop time frame.

Fired coasters will be ready to be picked up at YAAW by Friday (4 days after the workshop). Participants aged 12-15 must be accompanied by an adult.

June 23 Pat Bragg beaded photographs

Pat will demonstrate how to sew beads on to a photograph to enhance the image in a style that she has created from a dream. 

In the 2-hour workshop you will have time to create a work of your own from a choice of photos on canvas. All materials will be provided and you will go home with a packable (8”x10”) finished ( or mostly finished ) original beaded photograph  of your own. Cost of materials: $45.

June 30 Doug Rutherford watercolours

Paint the northern lights in watercolour! This introductory workshop will take participants through the steps of creating an 8×10 inch painting of a Yukon northern lights scene.

July 7 Linda Leon relief printmaking

Make your mark on the world! On July 7th, we are relief printing! In the first hour, cut your beautiful image into a linoleum plate. In the second hour, handprint as many prints as can be managed. Each print is unique through use of colour and under pressing. Materials are $10 + GST each.

July 14 Nicole Bauberger intro to encaustic painting

Paint with molten beeswax! This sculptural material engages all your senses with its sweet scent and the way the colours move under the heat gun. Explore your memories or imaginings of the Northern lights. Nicole will get you started with enough instruction to begin your explorations safely and then tailor her demonstrations to participants’ interests. Each participant will have access to 4 roughly 5×7 boards for their experiments. $95 plus a $30 per person materials charge, plus gst.

Nicole Bauberger layered acrylic ravens.

Drawing is no obstacle for this workshop which will teach you a variety of the properties of acrylic paint. Nicole will provide traceable patterns of her signature ravens and lead you through layering colours to see what the paint can do. We will start with one black and one white panel, and work back and forth between them. With acrylics, you can get anywhere from anywhere else. She will bring metallic and interference colours, so if you’d like to explore your Northern Lights experiences in paint, she can help you with that as well. 2 hours, $95 plus a $10 per person materials charge, plus gst.

Nicole Bauberger kites from waste stream film plastic

In this family-friendly workshop, we will collage 3-foot-tall sled kites from clean film plastic in the gallery. We will then take them out to the Pioneer Cemetery to test-fly and modify. This fun, experimental workshop will leave you with a device made with your own hands that you can then take and fly in the Carcross Desert or some other wide-open space.

We will be using tape, bamboo and kite string.

Children should register with a grown-up assistant. $5 plus gst materials cost per pair.
