Because of a generous grant from the Whitehorse Community Thrift Store, we will be offering a series of six art classes this August to October that focus on reusing materials to fuel your creativity. These subsidized workshops are on offer for only $15 each, the low price made possible because of the financial support of the thrift store.
We need at least two people to run each class, and each workshop is limited to eight people unless otherwise stated (we can accommodate up to 10 people in the mask making workshop).
Sunday, August 23: 1-3 pm
“Wishing Hearts” with Edwige Graham…learn how to hand sew and embellish a beautiful heart with repurposed textiles that can hang on your wall, from a Christmas tree, or anywhere else you wish to display it. This class is suitable for people ages 18 and up.
Sunday, August 30: 1-3 pm
Glass Sun Catcher
In this workshop with Aimee Ellis you will create a fused glass sun catcher made from repurposed glass (from broken windows and picture frames). No glass cutting experience is necessary. Aimee will provide tools and instructions, and will assist with your cutting as needed. Sun catchers will be fused at Aimee’s studio and will be available to pick up at Yukon Artists at Work one week after the class takes place. Participants aged 13 or younger must bring an adult assistant or co-register with an adult and work together.
Sunday, Sept. 13: 1-3 pm
Have a favourite sweater or pair of jeans that have holes in them but that you just can’t bear to throw out? Janet Patterson will show you how to mend your clothing using needle felting. Janet will supply the wool and needles; you just need to bring your damaged clothes. Participants aged 13 or younger must bring an adult assistant or co-register with an adult and work together.
Sunday, Sept. 27: 1-4 pm
Out of the Closet: Making Use of Granny’s Old Fur Coat
This workshop led by Pat Bragg will inspire you to re-purpose your granny’s old fur coat that has been hanging around for ages. Pat will show you how to take the fur coat apart and hand-sew pieces together to create a cover for a recycled pillow. Pat will provide all the materials except for the fur coat, which you are asked to bring. This workshop is suitable for those aged 16 and up.
Sunday, Oct. 4: 1-3 pm
Printing party with Nicole Bauberger. Nicole will bring her library of hand painted silk screens for you to use to print onto used clothing or other textiles. Bring t-shirts, tea towels or other textiles (maybe stock up at Love2Thrift if you don’t have anything on hand), or draw from Nicole’s stash. You will learn how to silkscreen print using various colours and eraser squeegees. You can combine and repeat images, mask areas off with tape, and create your own compositions. Participants aged 13 or younger must bring an adult assistant or co-register with an adult and work together. Note: you will have the option of picking up your pieces on the following Tuesday when they are dry, or carefully bring them home right away.
Sunday, Oct. 25: 1-3 pm
Just in time for Halloween, join Linda Leon for a fun mask making workshop with repurposed and recycled materials. This is a family-friendly workshop for ages 6 and up. Children 6 to 12 years old should be accompanied by an adult.
